Celebrating the Great Smoky Mountain's 75th Anniversary



Festivals, special events and performances are held frequently in downtown Waynesville, sponsored by the DOWNTOWN WAYNESVILLE ASSOCIATION and other area organizations.

Town Code Sec. 6-6. Animals prohibited at street fairs, festivals or parades.

May-Nov - 1st Friday each month, the original “ART after DARK” Downtown galleries remain open until 9pm, demonstrations, receptions, music.

June 19 & 20- ARTISTIC ENCOUNTERS Stroll Waynesville & "encounter" something artistic to brighten your day! Artist demos, music, storytelling & more. Event kick off Friday night, 6-9: Participating businesses will serve their favorite appetizer & share recipe. Saturday, 10-5: full day of artistic encounters throughout downtown! WGA, 452-9284.

June 26, July 10 & 24 and Aug 7, Fri Nights - 4 MOUNTAIN STREET DANCES Downtown is Alive at Night. Put on your cloggin’ & square dancin’ shoes. Enjoy an old-fashioned mountain hoe down! Live mountain music, demos & instruction by local clogging teams. Refreshments, bring a chair or blanket, in front of the Historic Courthouse. 6:30-9. No pets allowed.

July 4, Sat - STARS & STRIPES CELEBRATION Main St., Celebrating the Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s 75th anniversary. Live entertainment, sidewalk sales, food & fun for all ages, 11-3. No pets allowed.

July 17, Fri - FOLKMOOT USA PARADE Dancers & musicians from around the world will parade down Main Street to the Historic Courthouse for Opening Ceremonies of FOLKMOOT USA, 1pm.

July 25, Sat - INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL DAY Main St., Haywood County Arts Council & FOLKMOOT USA join together to present a daylong extravaganza of music, dance, crafts & food from around the world, 10am-5pm.

Aug 1, Sat - HAYWOOD COUNTY BOOK MANIA - First Presbyterian Church, 305 N. Main Street. Featuring story-telling and readings. Refreshments available for sale. 9am – 5pm. Contact Osondu Booksellers for more information, 456-8062.

Aug. 8, Sat - DOWNTOWN DOG WALK Courthouse lawn, Proceeds go to support the proposed SARGE’s Adoption Center in Haywood, 9:30-1pm, www.sargeandfriends.org

Sept 5, Sat - BLOCK PARTY Downtown is Alive at Night, dancing in the street with live bands, 7-10pm, children’s area, eats & treats, many shops & restaurants open, a portion of Main St. is closed.

Sept 4 & 5, Fri & Sat - 37th annual SMOKY MOUNTAIN FOLK FESTIVAL Two full evenings celebrating our mountain folk music. Celebrating Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s 75th anniversary. Stuart Auditorium, Lake Junaluska, 452.1688.

Oct 10, Sat - 26th annual CHURCH STREET ART & CRAFT SHOW Main St. is transformed into an art & craft marketplace for this one-day event; widely know as one of the finest in the region. Live mountain music & clogging, entertainment & food, Official event of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s 75th anniversary.10am-5pm.

Oct 17, Sat - 21st annual APPLE-HARVEST FESTIVAL Main St., APPLES, live mountain music, dance & food, crafts, cider, fresh fried pies & more! 10am-5pm.

Nov 22, Sun - HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE A Holiday Tradition on Main Street. Enjoy the sights, scents & sounds as the holiday season begins in festively decorated shops & galleries, 12noon–5 pm.

Dec 7, Mon - Evening Christmas Parade in Downtown Waynesville on Main Street, 6pm.

Dec 5 & 12, Sat evenings - A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS Come share our Holiday Tradition with Us! Caroling, live music, a live Nativity, Santa, old-fashioned wagon rides, storytelling, poetry & more. Main St. is lined with hundreds of luminaries, shops & restaurants open until 9pm.

Jan-May - Third Thursday each month, Noon Music Series, Enjoy a variety of instrumentals at lunchtime, Charles Alley, Director. 12noon-1:45, Grace Episcopal, 394 N. Haywood, 2 blocks from Main St.

April 24, Sat – “Quick Draw” Highly motivated live auction artists start & complete a work of art for sale. Silent auction items available also. Fundraising efforts support local ART teachers who inspire seniors to pursue art in college. Waynesville Inn
